Code & migration

Get your code and move to your own server

The code of every app you make with fingr is yours. How to download it, how to move the app to a server under your name, and how to keep changing it afterwards.

Upgraded apps · free, as often as you like

Download your code

For an upgraded app you can download the latest code any time as a single zip file. Downloading doesn't stop or cancel your app on fingr.

  1. 1

Open the app from “My apps” and click the “Code & migration” tab at the top of the left panel.

  2. 2

Under “Source code”, click “Download code” to get the latest code as a zip file. If the app changes after more requests, just download it again.

  3. 3

Unzip it somewhere easy to find (like your Documents folder). Use this folder when you edit the app yourself or hand it to a developer.

Full app code · how to run it · test accounts

What's in the download

  • The whole app — screens, features and the admin area. It's built with a widely used web framework (Ruby on Rails), so any developer can pick it up
  • README.md — how to run the app on your computer
  • TEST.md — test accounts and what to check, so you don't have to explain what the app does
  • LICENSE — confirms the code is yours (MIT license). Change it, run it elsewhere, even sell it

App data like members, orders and bookings, and photos or files your users uploaded, are not in the code download. To move your data too, use “Move to your own server” below.

Secrets like passwords and keys for payment or messaging services are left out too. If you run the app elsewhere yourself, add the keys from each service again.

Code downloads are available while the app is upgraded. If you plan to cancel, download it before the period ends.

Upgraded apps · 200 credits · connect two accounts, the rest is automatic

Move to your own server

Your app already runs as a real service on fingr's servers, so you don't have to move it. If you want the data in your own account, or your app has grown and needs a bigger server, we move it to a DigitalOcean server and a GitHub organization under your name. Sign in to connect both, and creating the server, moving the code and starting the app all happen automatically.

Now — fingr server

Hosting included

Part of the upgrade price ($49 / 30 days)

  • A real address you can share with customers
  • Your own domain
  • No server to look after

After moving — your server

$12–14 / month

Backups included · billed to your card directly by DigitalOcean

  • The server is in your account, so the data is too
  • Grow the server as your app grows
  • We connect your own domain to the new server
  1. 1

Sign up for DigitalOcean and add a card under “Billing”. It's a server company used all over the world, and you can sign up with Google. The monthly server bill goes to this card.

    Sign up for DigitalOcean ↗

  2. 2

Sign up for GitHub and create a free organization for your business. Your app's code is kept there, so it stays yours even if you stop using fingr. If you already have one, use it.

    Create a GitHub organization ↗

  3. 3

In fingr, open the app → “Code & migration” tab → “Move to your own server” and click “Connect DigitalOcean”. Sign in to DigitalOcean and click “Authorize”.

  4. 4

Then click “Connect GitHub organization”. Pick the organization you created and “All repositories”, then click “Install”.

  5. 5

Click “Start moving”. 200 credits come off now, and we return them if you disconnect DigitalOcean before we move it. Data like members and orders moves with the app by default — to start fresh with an empty app, turn on “Don't move my data”.

  6. 6

In about 20–30 minutes a server appears in your account, your app's code lands in your GitHub organization, and the app starts on the server. We email you the new address, and you can also see it in the “Code & migration” tab. Want your own domain on it? Tell the chatbot at the bottom right.

We use these connections only to create the server and deploy your app. Disconnect DigitalOcean with “Disconnect”, and GitHub from your organization's “GitHub Apps” settings, any time. The server and code stay where they are.

Secrets like the server key are kept in your GitHub organization's Secrets. Your GitHub security is your server's security, so turn on two-factor authentication.

After the move you pay the server, in-app AI usage and outside services like payments or text messages directly to each company.

The easiest way · same as now

Keep changing it with fingr

You can keep changing your app after downloading the code or moving servers. There are three ways — keep asking fingr, edit it yourself with an AI coding tool, or hand it to a developer. If the same app is changed in two places, one side's changes get lost, so pick one way.

  1. 1

Keep the app upgraded and send requests in the chat just like now. Credits work the same way.

  2. 2

The same goes for apps moved to your own server. We set up automatic deployment when we move it, so each finished request goes live on your server automatically — nothing to ask for or wait on.

  3. 3

If you cancel the upgrade, you can't change the app on fingr anymore. Apps moved to your own server keep running there, and from then on you change them yourself as below.

Claude Code · Cursor — just describe the change

Edit it yourself with an AI coding tool

fingr builds apps with AI coding tools behind the scenes. Open your code in the same kind of tool and you can change it in plain words, like a fingr request — no coding needed. The steps below use Claude Code.

  1. 1

Download the latest code from the “Code & migration” tab and unzip it. Download after your last change on fingr so it's up to date.

  2. 2

Install Claude Code and log in. It needs a paid Claude plan.

How to install Claude Code ↗

  3. 3

Open Claude Code in the unzipped folder and say “Read README.md and run this app on my computer.” It installs what's needed, starts the app and tells you the address to open (usually http://localhost:3000). Log in with a test account from TEST.md.

  4. 4

Describe changes like a fingr request, for example “Add a notes field to the booking screen.” Refresh the browser to check. Split big changes into smaller ones for better results.

  5. 5

When you're done, the changes need to go on the server your users use. If you moved the app to your own server, just say “Push this to GitHub” — once it's in the app's repository in your GitHub organization, it goes to your server automatically (usually 5–10 minutes). For a moved app, download the code from that repository instead of the zip (“Download the ○○ repository from GitHub”) so you start from the latest version.

Code you change yourself can't be brought back into fingr. Once you start editing it yourself, keep doing so instead of sending fingr requests — fingr changes the code it has, so your own edits would be left out.

Before changing things, say “Save the current state.” If something goes wrong, “Go back to the saved state” undoes it.

Other AI coding tools like Cursor work the same way.

Just pass on the download

Hand it to a developer

  1. 1

Send the zip file as it is. A developer who knows Ruby on Rails can run and change it straight from README.md.

  2. 2

TEST.md has the test accounts and what to check, so you don't need a long explanation of what the app does.

  3. 3

If the app is on your own server, inviting the developer to your GitHub organization is enough. Pushing to the app's repository deploys it to your server automatically, and FINGR_DEPLOY.md in the repository explains how. Invite them to your DigitalOcean team only if they need to work on the server itself. You stay the owner — remove the invites when the work is done.

What people ask before moving

Code & migration questions

Does downloading the code end my fingr app?
No. Your app keeps running on fingr and you can keep sending requests. Downloads are free, as often as you like.
Can I download or move a free app?
No. Code downloads and moving to your own server are for upgraded apps.
Can I get data like members and orders?
The code download has no data. “Move to your own server” moves your data to your server along with the app (you can also move without data). If you need another way, ask the chatbot.
Can I move to a server other than DigitalOcean?
We move apps to DigitalOcean. To run it elsewhere (AWS, Google Cloud and so on), download the code and deploy it yourself or with a developer.
How much is the server after moving?
Usually $12–14 a month for one app (backups included), billed to your card directly by DigitalOcean. If you grow the server for more users, it costs more.
